What are zygomatic implants?

Impianti Zigomatici

The zygomatic implants are implants that are used in case of severe maxillary atrophy.

When do we choose this method of intervention?

This surgical method is chosen in the case of maxillary bone atrophy and if intervention with standart implants is not possible.

People say, “You don't have enough bone, and implants cannot be placed for a fixed prosthesis”; it is true that sometimes the bone available in the upper jaw area is not enough to be able to intervene with standart implants, but this problem is solved through the use of zygomatic implants, which, as the name suggests, are inserted directly into the cheekbone.

What is maxillary atrophy?

Atrophy is a condition characterized by a decrease in bone volume, already fully developed, with subsequent functional impairment. Atrophy is defined as physiological when structures naturally regress; it can be of traumatic or pathological origin in case of trauma or pathology.

Are they different from standart implants?

Yes, zygomatic implants are different from standart. They are longer than and have an inclination that can range from 0 ° to 60 °.

In order to undergo this operation, you must first speak with a doctor or specialist who must assess the general condition of the dental arches and their tissues (maxillary sinuses) before deciding on an intervention.

Therefore, computed tomography and orthopantomography are required, which can allow us to assess the position of your anatomical structures. The case will then be examined and a decision will be made on which method to choose.

How does the intervention take place?

The duration of the intervention is usually a couple of hours. A fixed prosthesis can be installed within 24 hours without any problem. During the first months, a temporary fixed prosthesis is used, followed by a final fixed prosthesis.
